UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG
ROWE SCIENTIFIC CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP 2019

Congratulations to Mr Jonathan Bartley, the 2019 recipient of the Rowe Scientific Chemistry Scholarship at the University of Wollongong in NSW.

Mr Jonathan Bartley

Image_14

In Jonathan’s words,

"Even from a young age, I’ve always been fascinated by the wonder of our planet. David Attenborough documentaries fueled my desire to learn.

Through school I loved every science lesson, learning more and more. The amazing Periodic Videos on YouTube by Professor Sir Martyn Poliakoff affirmed for me that chemistry was where I wanted to go. His knowledge and enthusiasm cemented the desire for me to share in this understanding of the atoms and molecules that make us.

I love teaching and hope one day to become a university chemistry educator and researcher. Upon finishing school my decision of what I wanted to do was made very easy… Chemistry.

I’m currently in my third year of my Bachelor of Science - Honours (Dean's Scholar) (Chemistry) degree, thoroughly enjoying organic chemistry whilst look forward to my honours year next year. I hope to one day teach and to share my love of chemistry with future generations of students. I feel very honoured to receive this scholarship and would like to thank everyone at Rowe Scientific for their efforts to nurture the education of chemists both now and the future."

Well done Jonathan, from the national staff of Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd.

UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND
THE ROWE SCIENTIFIC RHD CHEMISTRY TRAVEL FELLOWSHIP

Congratulations to Mr Liam Wilson, the current (2018) recipient of the Rowe Scientific Research Higher Degree Chemistry Travel Fellowship, at the University of Queensland.

Image_15

In Liam’s words;

“I am currently completing my PhD working on a project involving the study of enzymes which give antibiotic resistance to bacteria.

The growing threat of antibiotic resistance throughout the world is a major global concern. This gives me a real passion and motivation for my project. My current work concerns a group of enzymes, metallo-beta-lactamases.

These enzymes pose a very real risk to global health since they are active against nearly all front line antibiotics and currently we have no effective inhibitors which are able to stop their activity.

With the help of your generous fellowship I will be able to travel to Oxford University in order to work with an expert in this field to test potential inhibitors on these enzymes as well as new antibiotics."

Congratulations Liam, from the national staff of Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd.

RMIT UNIVERSITY ROWE SCIENTIFIC CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP

Congratulations to Ms Rachael Bell, the 2019 recipient of the Rowe Scientific Chemistry Scholarship.

Image_16

In Rachael’s words;

“I have always been drawn to chemistry and have progressed from home experiments with vinegar and baking soda to analytical chemistry in the area of natural products discovery at RMIT.

The field of natural product discovery is a continually growing area of study that adapts to the changing needs of our society and the development of new technologies, making it a very exciting area of research.

Studying chemistry helps satisfy my persistent curiosity; I find it extremely rewarding to gain any level of understanding about how things work on the smallest of scales.

Chemistry never fails to present me with the answers to questions I had yet to consider. I am very grateful for the support provided by the Rowe Scientific Chemistry Scholarship and I am very honoured to be a recipient.”

Well done Rachael, from the national staff at Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd.

THE UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE ROWE SCIENTIFIC CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP

Congratulations to Mr Lewis McFarlane, the recipient of the 2019 Rowe Scientific Chemistry Scholarship at the University of Adelaide.

Image_17

In Lewis’s words;

“Chemistry has always been an interest to me; as a child, I would sit on the floor with a family friend and his model kit. He would teach me what small molecules like water and ethanol looked like; ever since I have been fascinated with organic chemistry and understanding the structure of organic
 molecules.

I am now in the final year of my undergraduate study and am excited to start postgraduate study next year. I have a specific interest in using structural determination techniques to study how small molecules affect protein-protein interactions. Specifically, the protein-protein interactions associated with a range of neurological conditions, such as Alzheimer’s and prion diseases.

I am incredibly grateful for the Rowe scholarship; the funds will allow me to focus all my energy on my final year of study as I will not have to work part-time in order to pay rent and living expenses. It will also allow me to purchase a laptop that will be capable of the data analysis required for my postgraduate study.”

Well done Lewis, and good luck in your studies, from the national staff of Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd.

Dear Clients.

Winter has now settled in and hopefully we will see a lot more rain before it ends.

The AFL season is now also at its half way point and at the time of writing this, both of the local sides are in the top 8.

I have now returned from 4 weeks leave where my wife and I welcomed our 2nd child which turned out to be another little girl who we have named Addie. Daniel has also returned from 4 weeks leave where he and his wife Irene welcomed their 1st child, a little girl called Mia.

As a reminder, we will be exhibiting at trade shows in Adelaide this year. We will be at the “WineTech” event from the 21st to the 24th of July as well as the WIOA Conference in August and RACI event in December. Thanks to all those who visited us recently at the Histology and IWAG conferences.

Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to thank my team here in Adelaide for their good work in the 2018-19 Financial Year and of course all of you who read this, our clients! You are all awesome and I thank you for your continued ongoing support.

All the best from,

VICTORIA & TASMANIA

Image_30

Dear Clients.

The brisk mornings ensures our circulation gets going from early in the day, as long as you keep moving the cold won’t catch up – well, that’s the theory anyway!

As we head into the new financial year, we would like to thank our Tasmanian and Victorian customers for your continued support over the past 12 months. We still receive communications via emails, faxes, PO’s etc. showing our old Hallam contact details. Please ask the relevant departments to update their system with our new Doveton details.

We have noticed an increase in “web traffic” with significantly more orders being entered online, we would appreciate any comments or feedback on your “Rowe online experience” as well as any suggestions on what you expect from the site.

We have just received a container load of ovens and incubators from MMM in Germany. If you have one on back order you will be receiving it very soon. For those of you in the market for a new oven or incubator, they are in stock, no need to wait!

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Image_31

Dear Clients.

Thanks for supporting us, we had a great year as I trust did you. We continue to import BRAND liquid handling products and have started stocking their "A" grade glassware as well.

Our manufacturing laboratory was discussing our internal glassware calibration procedures and passed me the NIST technical guidance paper. It reminded me that “A” grade glassware is really only “A” grade when it complies with specifications and tolerances. We are confident that we meet this requirement when selling BRAND products.

Our first order for a NATA mutual recognition (DAkkS) certified product arrived this week with 6 volumetric pipettes – “A” grade of course. Selling BRAND products gives us confidence in our company slogan - Rowe Scientific - for accuracy and professionalism.

We look forward to supporting your future glassware needs.

All the best from:
Peter Sommers and the Western Australian Team.
