CLEVER PERSON'S QUIZ

Image_5

Question:
Raw or rare meat may leak a red substance many would describe as 'blood', however this substance does not contain any blood/ haemoglobin. What then, is this red substance?

The answer will be in the next edition of the Rowe Scientific newsletter.

Did you know the answer to the last quiz question?

Victims of heavy metal poisoning may be treated with what common dye?

Answer:

Prussian blue

Heavy metals, such as Caesium or Thallium, that have been absorbed into the body are removed by the liver and passed into the intestine when they are then re-absorbed back into the body. Prussian blue works by binding to Thallium and Caesium in the intestine, where they can pass out of the body rather than be re-absorbed. The first modern synthetic pigment, Prussian blue was discovered by accident in 1704. Its value was immediately clear, as it produced a stable and vivid blue and was much less expensive than similar pigments of the time. The name comes from its use for the military uniforms of the Prussian army in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Image_10

Ms Nadine Kellermann

In Nadine's own words;

"My name is Nadine Kellermann, and I am currently completing my third year at the University of Wollongong studying a Bachelor of Medicinal Chemistry (Honours) (Deans Scholar). Throughout my education, I have developed a strong passion for chemistry and its array of applications across multiple fields. My chemical interests lie in both inorganic and organic chemistry. Following the completion of my undergraduate degree, I hope to further my education with a postgraduate study in chemistry. I am beyond grateful for the generosity of Rowe Scientific for providing me with this scholarship, which will enable me to dedicate more time towards my studies."

Well done Nadine, from all of us here at Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd.

EDITH COWAN UNIVERSITY ROWE SCIENTIFIC PTY LTD RESEARCH FUND 2023

Congratulations to Mr Kurt Macri, the current recipient of the Edith Cowan University, Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd Research Fund for 2023.

Image_11

In Kurt's own words;

"I have recently completed a Bachelor of Science Degree, majoring in applied Chemistry and Aviation, and I am now undertaking a Master of Science by Research at Edith Cowan University.

Chemistry has always really interested me, and through my undergraduate degree I came to see that there is such a close relationship between chemistry and the environmental issues we are facing. This has led me to investigate alternative uses for carbon emissions, which is the topic of my masters research. The research will focus on the conversion of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide, which can be useful to industry, as not only will this lessen emissions, but also provide incentive to businesses to adopt new methods. Further research will consist of the conversion of carbon dioxide to other carbon based molecules such as methane or formic acid.

I am also highly interested in synthetic fuels as I believe that there must be an alternative to current fuel sources that is just as efficient, yet has less emissions and will work with our current technology.

I am extremely grateful to the Rowe Scientific Foundation for providing me with the Rowe Scientific Research Fund. This has already allowed me to participate in an advanced chemistry unit externally in NSW and will help to provide me with resources required to undertake my research."

Well done Kurt, from all of us here at Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd.

UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE ROWE SCIENTIFIC PTY LTD CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP 2023

Congratulations to the following recipients of the Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd Chemistry Scholarship 2023 at the University of Adelaide. Well done to you both.

Image_12

Ms Kate McGregor

In Kate's own words;

"I am so thankful for be able to receive this scholarship.

 I am currently in my third year of the Bachelor of Science (Advanced) at the University of Adelaide, majoring in chemistry and biochemistry. I am particularly interested in organic chemistry and the applications toward drug design and synthesis. My study in biochemistry has allowed me to appreciate some of the amazing processes that go on within the body, but also how issues in these pathways can cause disease. Using this knowledge, I have discovered an interest in how we can use chemical synthesis to design drugs to treat these conditions. Next year I plan to commence an honours project in chemistry particularly focusing on this area."

Image_13

Mr Daniel Perkins

In Daniel's own words;

"The thought of everything being made of an unfathomable number of miniscule building blocks that are constantly rearranging has always amazed me, leading me to want to learn more about them and their nature through studying chemistry. I find that chemistry is a science that bridges physics to biology, geology and more, all of which I have a great interest in. To me, understanding chemistry translates to an in-depth understanding of everyday life in many applications, such as understanding how plant growth can be optimised by changing their chemical environment or how the chemical processes that create food products affect the final product. Major interests of mine include how complex natural molecules of interest can be created and adjusted through biomimetic synthesis, or how natural processes can be sustainably utilized to propel renewable chemical practices."

Congratulations and well done to you both from the national staff of Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd.

"I am currently a first-year student at Adelaide University studying for a bachelor's degree of Viticulture and Oenology. I am incredibly thankful to Rowe Scientific for this scholarship so I can further support my studies and learn more about the intricacies of the winemaking industry. I have always been interested in chemistry and this degree is the perfect opportunity for me to look at it in a setting where it relates to the real world and how it is affected by everything around it. I am also very interested in how grape varieties change the final product and how that affects the market."

Congratulations and well done to you both from the national staff of Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd.

ECU ROWE SCIENTIFIC PTY LTD AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES 2023

VICTORIA UNIVERSITY ROWE SCIENTIFIC PTY LTD CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP 2023

Congratulations to Ms My-Linh Bolin, Victoria University 2023 recipient of the Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd Chemistry Scholarship.

Ms My-Linh Bolin

In My-Linh's own words;

“Someone once told me that the brain processes a large amount of information throughout your life, choosing to keep what it deems to be ‘most important’ to you, for a reason. When I returned to Australia after two years abroad, wanting to focus on my career, I decided to think on the things my brain had decided to deem important. From the earliest memory in primary school, through high school and young adulthood, it always led to one thing. Science.

I have always been fascinated with the complexity of the world around us, and the miraculous scientific breakthroughs made

Image_16

every day. I wanted to be a part of that, of understanding the bigger picture by looking at the molecular ones, and is why I chose a Bachelor of Science at Victoria University. By majoring in Biotechnology, I saw the ability to experience a range of scientific pursuits.

With the proud honour of receiving the Rowe Scientific Scholarship, I plan to further my studies into a Masters, and PhD to create more important moments, for myself and for others. And like my dad tells me, “If you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life”.

All the best My-Linh.

CURTIN UNIVERSITY ROWE SCIENTIFIC PTY LTD SCHOLARSHIP IN METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING 2023

Congratulations to Mr Jordan Liu, the current recipient of the Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd Scholarship in Metallurgical Engineering at Curtin University in WA.

Mr Jordan Liu

In Jordan's own words;

“My name is Jordan Liu and I am currently a fourth year student studying a five and a half year double degree in metallurgical engineering and finance at the Curtin School of Mines in Kalgoorlie. Outside of my academic studies, the thing that I enjoy the most is playing basketball, as I have been playing the sport competitively since I was little and it is where I have met a lot of people who have influenced and shaped me to become the person I am today. Coincidentally, it is also how I first got introduced into the mining industry and to metallurgy.

Image_17

How I originally got motivated to pursue a career in metallurgy was that I always had a passion for chemistry throughout primary school and high school and I always knew that I wanted to have a career related to this field. However, through basketball, I was able to meet a mining engineer who convinced me to pursue a career in metallurgy as it combined the aspects of chemistry with mining. Thus, I ended up choosing a degree in metallurgical engineering (although at the time I knew little to nothing about what metallurgy was actually about). Initially, I did not actually enjoy this degree as I knew little about mineral processing, however through my vacation programs that I did on-site at various different gold and iron ore processing plants, I have come to absolutely love metallurgy. This is as now, I understand the principles behind processing and also the fact that almost every day, there is a new challenge that arises. I also enjoy how much collaboration and teamwork is involved, as I have been able to meet people from all different walks of life with unique perspectives and views.

As such, I have been very lucky to have been able to complete three vacation programs with Northern Star Resources, AngloGold Ashanti and FMG, as well as having done mill shutdown work and lab work with Bureau Veritas over my four years in university. I have particularly enjoyed the project work as I believe this is the area that I thrive best in as it has allowed me to challenge myself in a critical manner to overcome an issue or innovate a new idea to better production or safety to a plant. Outside of university, I am also involved in the WASM Wombats Mining Team, competing in old school mining techniques and with the TLG organisation as a tutor.

Receiving the 2023 Rowe Scientific Scholarship means a lot to me as this scholarship will provide me the necessary funding for my education and other related expenses as I finish the final years of my metallurgical engineering degree. It especially is of importance as I am studying at the Curtin School of Mines in Kalgoorlie and thus, this scholarship will help to ease the burden of rent, food and general living expenses, so that I can fully focus on my academic studies. With this scholarship, I will also endeavour to spend a portion of the finances on education, through a better laptop and more textbooks.

Having this scholarship will not only provide financial benefits, as I also would want to have the opportunity to work with Rowe Scientific, as I have always wanted to work more in the test-work area of metallurgy. Having previously worked in a mineralogy lab, I want to continue building my experience in different areas of metallurgy before I graduate.

I am grateful to Rowe Scientific for providing me with this scholarship and I would love the opportunity to work with Rowe Scientific in the near future.

Sincerely, Jordan Liu."

Well done Jordan, and good luck in your future scientific career, from the national staff of Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd.

CHARLES STURT UNIVERSITY ROWE SCIENTIFIC PTY LTD CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP

Congratulations to Ms Nicole McNamara, a recipient of the Charles Sturt University’s Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd Chemistry Scholarship.

Ms Nicole McNamara

In Nicole's own words;

“Chemistry has always made sense to me, it is logical. Even if not at first. If it does not seem logical, then you haven't learnt the particular mechanism or theory to explain it yet. One of the best feelings is the lightbulb moment when your brain makes that connection between new content and an old question.

Being a mature aged student who already works within the Analytical Chemistry industry, I did not come to CSU with a P's make degrees mentality. I have even elected to take many subjects for which I could have received recognition of prior learning for.

Image_18

Instead I am here to deepen my knowledge, learn all that I can and build my confidence when engaging in complex chemical conundrums. With that being said, an aspect I have enjoyed the most has been going back to the basics, the fundamental theories. Particularly the early research and discoveries which have formed modern Chemistry today. An added bonus has been being able to view a complex, sometimes overwhelming, workplace problem with that refreshed focus on the basics."

Best wishes in your future career Nicole, from the national staff of Rowe Scientific Pty Ltd.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Image_24

Dear Clients.

Grrrrrrreetings from the chilly West. Bad enough in winter to go to and from work in the dark without freezing, as we are currently (or as I write, wet).

We were recently approached by STARNA to be their exclusive Australian Distributor. I would think that most of us would be aware that they manufacture glass and quartz cells and cuvettes for use in UV/Vis spectrophotometers, but we are learning about their CRM range. Anyone working in a regulated industry, or needing to calibrate their instruments, can buy from the STARNA range of CRM’s. Standards are NIST traceable, manufactured under ISO 17034 and calibrated under ISO 17025 accreditation to satisfy a broad range of applications. Call us if you would like a quote, or need to get your existing standards re-certified.

Business sentiment remains positive from our orders – as always - thank you for your business.

All the best from:
Peter Sommers and the Western Australian Team.
